Teamsters Local 104 Takes the Capitol: Rank-and-File Power on Full Display
PHOENIX, AZ — On Wednesday, February 11th, the halls of the Arizona State Capitol didn't just house politicians; they held the strength and spirit of Teamsters Local 104. In a powerful display of civic engagement, over 20 of our dedicated rank-and-file members—all of whom are members by choice—spent the day at the seat of government, ensuring the voices of Arizona’s working families were impossible to ignore. This wasn't just a visit; it was a day of high-impact advocacy, recognition, and education in motion.
A Seat at the Table: Partnering with the Governor’s Office
The day began with a significant meeting on the 8th Floor of the Executive Tower. Our delegation sat down with the Governor's staff to engage in a collaborative dialogue regarding the future of our state. Rather than a simple grievance session, this was a moment of true partnership. Our members brought forward the critical issues facing Arizona’s wage earners, finding common ground on the need for economic stability and strong labor protections. By continuing this direct line of communication with the Governor’s office, Local 104 is ensuring that the people who build and move Arizona have a hand in shaping the policies that govern it.
Direct Advocacy in the Rose Garden
The day kicked off with a working lunch in the historic Rose Garden, where our members met face-to-face with 12 State Representatives and Senators. Eschewing the typical lobbyist approach, our members spoke directly from experience, discussing the real-world issues that impact their jobs, their families, and their communities. This direct dialogue reminds our elected officials exactly who keeps Arizona’s economy moving.
A Historic Recognition
The delegation then moved to the House Gallery, where the energy was palpable. Representative Alma Hernandez spoke from the floor to read an official Proclamation honoring the legacy and contributions of Teamsters Local 104. As a permanent symbol of this honor, a flag flown over the State Capitol in our name was presented to the Local. This flag will now be proudly displayed in the Union Hall as a reminder of our collective influence.
Witnessing Democracy in Action
Advocacy requires understanding the "how" as much as the "why." Following the Proclamation, members attended a Transportation Committee meeting. Our delegation watched from the front row as bills were debated, heard, and voted into law, gaining firsthand insight into the legislative hurdles and victories that affect the transportation and logistics industry.
"True power isn’t just found at the bargaining table; it’s found when our members stand together at the seat of government. Watching our rank-and-file leaders walk the halls of the Capitol reminds every legislator that Teamsters Local 104 is the backbone of Arizona’s economy. We aren't just here to watch the process—we are here to lead it. I am incredibly proud of our members for showing up, speaking out, and ensuring our voice is heard loud and clear."
— Karla Schumann, Secretary-Treasurer, Teamsters Local 104
Why We Show Up
This day at the Capitol reinforces a core Teamster truth: Politics is personal. When we engage with our legislators, we protect our contracts, our safety standards, and our future.
To the members who took the time to represent us in Phoenix, thank you. You proved that when Teamsters show up, the State of Arizona listens.
